Support groups are fundamentally about human warmth, friendship and companionship with people who have had or are having the same experience as each other. They are often originally started by someone who has had a bereavement and then if nothing is in their area, they start their own support group and network.

The information here is a basic explanation of what might be involved in setting up your group but each group will belong to itself - no-one should be in control and the group leader's role should be as a facilitator and enabler - you don't have to be trained to do it but to make the group successful, the guidelines here might help.

The important points to take note of are about people's feelings within the group and keeping things overt so that divisions don't happen - this ought to be one of the original ground rules
