My name is Chris Platts and I have recently
settled to live in Normandy (76) with my wife, two dogs and two
cats. Before that we lived in Kent and then Sussex where I worked as
a Probation Officer for over 20 years. I took early retirement in
2009 but decided that I wanted to develop my professional skills in
a different direction so I started a Diploma in Counselling. I am
about halfway through the course and have already completed the
Certificate level. I hope to fully qualify in 2012/13. For this
reason I am offering my services for free.
Before training as a Probation Officer (CQSW), I qualified as a
psychiatric nurse (RMN) and continued to develop this interest in
mental health issues throughout my career. I think that my working
life to date has given me considerable insight into the problems
that people experience. I have a particular interest in anger
management, substance misuse and depressive illnesses.
I use a Person Centred approach underpinned by Gerard Egan’s Skilled
Helper Model. This model suggests a systematic approach, allowing
the client identify their problems, explore options for resolution
and move on to developing strategies to achieve change. Although I
follow this particular process I do have a good understanding of
other techniques and theories that are employed in Counselling and
adapt my practice to suit the needs of the client.
